COMPREHENSIVE BEHAVIORAL TREATMENT (ComB) FOR BODY-FOCUSED REPETITIVE BEHAVIORS
Comprehensive Behavioral Treatment (ComB) is an evidence-based approach for body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs), such as hair pulling, skin picking, and nail biting. Rather than treating these behaviors as simply “bad habits,” ComB looks at the specific factors that trigger and maintain the behavior for each person—including sensory experiences, thoughts, emotions, urges, movements, and environmental cues. Treatment then uses this individualized understanding to develop practical strategies for interrupting the behavior, responding differently to urges, and meeting the needs the BFRB may be serving in more helpful ways.
