COGNITIVE-BEHAVIORAL THERAPY (CBT)

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) combines two different but related approaches:

  1. Cognitive Therapy, which addresses and tries to change “stinkin’ thinkin’”—hoping to reduce the detrimental effects of negative thoughts on peoples’ actions and well-being, and

  2. Behavioral Therapy, which seeks to help people achieve new learning through behavioral change and exposure to feared situations. One such approach is Behavioral Activation (BA) which helps those struggling with depression to build motivation and get moving.

Over the years, these separate approaches have been combined by many therapists, and the combined approaches have extensive research supporting their application with depression, anxiety, PTSD, and basically any other mental health concern.
